Manhattan Cow Tunnels Once Helped Deliver Kosher Meat

kosher butcherIn Manhattan in the 1870s it was illegal to walk cattle down the street. So what did they do? They built a cow tunnel underground to allow for the flow of cattle to Greenwich Avenue. The cows were driven to the slaughterhouses to become Kosher Meat. In 1928, there were two-story cattle pens at the corner of 12th avenue and 39th street as well as at the dock of West 34th, where the Manhattan Abattoir was.

Since these cattle tunnels represent the meat industry in 20th century Manhattan, they are eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. The development of urban foodways is an important factor in how people lived in Manhattan, and the fact that the tunnels were built for kosher meat and not pedestrians also makes their construction worthy of registry.

As everyone gets ready for 2011, they’re beginning to realize just how long ago these methods occurred  – more than 80 years! – years before refrigerated trucks were introduced. Few living individuals can even remember these times.

To celebrate New York’s history of kosher meat and having meat delivered by tunnel, truck and now the internet, let’s get a nice piece of steak from our kosher butcher.
